Anthropology, Walk & Talk

Is anthropology about difference and diversity, or communication and consensus?

Coming from different places and backgrounds,

how do we start from and also reflect on our own lived experiences,

as we study anthropology?

Let’s still walk and talk, shall we?

從線上教學、到混合模式、再回到面授課堂;

“So many people say, ‘We are all in the same boat, we are all in the same boat’,

and I was like… No, this is a better way of saying it,

‘We are actually all in the same storm.’”

How can we make it possible to keep connected with each other,

in a world of social distancing and societal uncertainties?

Many grassroots elders in Hong Kong are engaged in waste picking for meager income in order to survival in the community. They make significant contributions to waste recycling but they are generally neglected by the society.

“Co-designingan Iron Trolley for Cardboards Recycling” is one of the Action Projects of “PolyU Jockey Club ‘Operation SOINNO’ Season 2 Programme “Empathising Elderly in Workplace”. The aim of the project is to pool together efforts from different parties to re-design the work trolley used by waste pickers in order to reduce their work strain, increase their work safety and upholding their dignity.

documentary/ 25'20"/ 2018

position: photographer

This community art project aims to invite and form inter-ethnic and inter-generational friendship for the purpose of making art together. Through it, questions of social inclusion/exclusion were explored through art and cultural participation. A dozen Hong Kong-born local Chinese and ethnic minority youth, along with half a dozen senior citizens living near an art space in Ngau Tau Kok, joined hands, amidst laughter, to use creative visual arts to connect to their family memories, migration, neighborhood changes, and even everyday discrimination. Initiated by Hong Kong Baptist University and 1a Space, and with funding from the Fung Hon Chu Foundation, the project invited Hong Kong artists (Ricky Yeung Sau Churk, Yu Shuk Pui Bobby, and Ip Wai Lung) to provide guided practice. The art works made were later presented in an exhibition curated by John Erni and Louis Ho. (A commissioned documentary project by Hong Kong Baptist University)
